    Some motorcycle wobble is normal. If you’ve ever had a front-end wander or feel like it was on ice, that’s normal too.

    But excessive, uncontrollable vibration and general unsteadiness can be very dangerous. Your hands and feet could both lose control of the bike at highway speeds; no rider wants that to happen!

    Below are some reasons why your motorcycle is wobbling:

    1. Loose bolts.

    Fix this with an inspection before hitting the road again after a ride.   It’s a good idea to check all your bolts regularly anyway – but even more so if you notice any shakiness going on when riding your bike – because shaking starts from loose fasteners!

    2. Damaged components.

    If your steering head, front wheel spindle, or swingarm is damaged, it can affect the way your forks and/or rear shocks absorb bumps in the road. When these vital parts are compromised, the result may be a wobbling bike.   Have your suspension checked out by a mechanic if you have any doubts about its integrity.

    3. Worn tires or warped wheels.

    It’s easy for most riders to tell when their tire tread is worn down too low, but sometimes even newish motorcycles will develop tire wear problems that cause that tread to become “out of round.” This will affect your bike’s stability. Getting your wheel rotation competed in the appropriate time would be beneficial to stop excessive wear on your tires.

    4. Tires that are overinflated or underinflated.

    Tire pressure affects motorcycle ride too obviously tire wear is interconnected with this, but it also makes a difference in the way the tires flex when taking corners or riding up hills. And since motorcycles handle differently on different tires, make sure you know what kind of rubber you have mounted before you take your bike out for its first spin after an offseason storage period – because one type may make your bike wobble more than another!   If you’re not sure which brand and model tire came on your bike originally, check with your dealer or owner’s manual for details.

    5. Worn swingarm bearings.

    This problem is less common than the rest, but it’s also more serious – because a worn-out swingarm bearing can harm your rear tire or even damage other components if it gets bad enough!

    It may be hard to track this kind of wear on your own: the shaking will only happen when you hit bumps and curbs at high speeds, not when you ride normal roads. If you suspect your bike may have an issue with its bearings, take it in for a service as soon as possible or risk putting yourself and others in danger.

    And now that we’ve covered why motorcycles shake… here are some tips on what you can do about them!

    6. Check Steering Head Bearings

    Motorcycle steering is a complex matter. There are many angles and adjustments that must be made to make steering as light as possible for the rider. And it’s not just about aesthetics, either. The lighter steering makes riding easier on your wrists, elbows and shoulders.

    The steering head bearings (SHB) provide support for the spindle, steering axle shaft, and handlebars of the motorcycle so they can turn without binding or shaking too much due to vibration from bumps in the road or engine vibrations coming up through the frame of the bike. These SHB are what keep everything aligned so you can comfortably ride your motorcycle with ease!

    If something goes wrong with these SHB then you will most likely experience wobbles while trying to steer your bike around. These malfunctions could be due to SHB either being too loose or too tight. Due to the complexity of motorcycle steering, sometimes it is hard for riders to diagnose what could be causing the wobble so they should take their bike into a shop to have an expert diagnose and fix the steering issue properly.

    What are Speed Wobbles?

    A motorcycle speed wobble is an instability in steering that causes the bike to stop steering straight and causes the bike to wobble. A speed wobble is caused by a structural imbalance or by steering too quickly. A speed wobble usually occur when the bike is at speed and cornering but can happen at low speeds as well.

    Often, speed wobbles are fixed by steering into the wobbly direction to remove some steering input until the motorcycle feels steady. Sometimes, it may be necessary to lean the bike more than usual for an upcoming turn, which can eliminate pressure on some contact patches.

    What are high speed wobble?

    People talk about high speed wobble as a motorcycle suddenly steering itself to the left or right, with a strong wobble that’s difficult to control. steering head bearings or steering stem bearings are usually the cause of this problem. High speed wobbles are no different from normal wobbling, however with the extra pressure of going faster, your bike will give into wobbling earlier.

    This is very common for people on the highway when their front tire starts to wobble. Try applying a slight about of front braking pressure and see if the wobbles go away by reducing your speed a little.

    Do all motorcycles wobble or is it just mine?

    All motorcycles have the potential to wobble if the components aren’t calibrated correctly but most motorcycles will never get a case of the wobbles. If you can’t work out the true source of the wobble, bring it to a qualified mechanic for inspection. It’s possible that you have an issue with another component that’s affecting how your motorcycle handles turns or bumps – which means that it will continue to cause complications until you do something about it!

    What can I do if my motorcycle is wobbling?

    If this problem only happens on occasion, say every now and then when riding over big bumps or hitting corners really hard, don’t worry about it too much. Just remember to ease up on the throttle as you lean into sharp turns, give yourself plenty of space behind other vehicles before coming out of those turns yourself, and avoid hitting big bumps at high speeds. You can even use a little less tire pressure to give yourself a smoother ride if the wobbles only happen under specific circumstances.

    But if you find that your motorcycle starts to wobble after going through a few turns or whenever you hit a bump, it’s never a good idea to ignore the issue – because sooner or later, all those little rides where your wheel shimmies could add up until they cause an accident! If you suspect something might be wrong with the way your motorcycle handles from one tight turn to another, don’t hesitate to bring it in for service and see what needs adjusting on your bike.

    What is the most comfortable riding position on a motorcycle?

    A motorcycle is a great way to get around town. If you’ve never ridden a motorcycle before or you are new, it can be uncomfortable and intimidating at first, but with the right gear and position, it’s actually really fun and pretty comfortable! But what is the most comfortable riding position and the factors that make it so comfortable?

    The “Standard” or “upright” riding position is generally the most comfortable riding position for most people regardless of height, age, and body shape. But what might be an upright, neutral riding position for one person might not be the same for another. That is why it is important to not just look at your riding position but also unpack what the individual elements of the upright position are so you can have the most comfortable ride possible!

    Let’s expand on what the Standard or upright riding position is, why it is the most comfortable, and why you might still be feeling discomfort in an upright position.

    What is the Standard or Upright Riding Position?

    The Standard or Upright riding position is when you’re sitting up straight with the spine in a relatively natural and neutral state. The hips will be slightly leaned back so your weight is distributed around your butt and your legs aren’t fully extended – this provides support for the body and reduces fatigue throughout the ride.

    To achieve this position, the handlebars will be above the shoulders and close to the chest (not uncomfortably far away, but not too close either), however, this position can vary depending on personal preference.

    Why is the upright riding position the most comfortable?

    The upright riding position is the most comfortable riding position because it places the least strain on any joints and places the spine in a natural position of rest. Having the hips slightly leaned back and thrusting your shoulders forward is a position that almost anyone can maintain for hours in.

    Why am I still feeling discomfort when in an upright riding position?

    Because of their height and reach, some people naturally feel more comfortable with handlebars closer to the chest and some people naturally feel more comfortable with the elements of their motorcycle closer or further away, higher or lower.

    Let’s start with the Handlebars…

    Handlebars

    Experimenting with your handlebar height is a quick way to find out what is most comfortable for you when in the upright position. If you feel like your arms are extended too far when in the upright riding position, try moving the handlebars higher up or even slightly closer to make sure that they fit with your natural range of motion.

    If your bars are too low, you’re probably going to have trouble getting over bumps in the road; if they’re too high, you might start getting tired on long rides or feel like your arms aren’t extended enough for proper steering.

    Generally, a standard handlebar height for a motorcycle is between the chest and chin level. If you’re in an upright position and your shoulders are naturally thrust back when relaxed, then your handlebars should be just above shoulder level. This will feel most natural in terms of arms being extended to reach the bars comfortably by the top half of your torso (shoulder blades) rather than by your lower body (butt).

    Now let’s talk about Reach…

    Reach

    The reach is more complicated because it takes into account not only height but also arm length! To find out if reach adjustment might be necessary, make sure that both hands fit on either side of the bars without feeling too cramped or like they’re reaching too far:

    Key Points of Comfort: Hands should be able to rest comfortably on the bars without too much of a stretch or being cramped.

    Arms should be slightly bent – not fully extended nor with elbows resting against your body.

    This is also where you’ll experiment with different positions for the handlebars so they fit within your comfort range and feel most natural for you! If you feel like your arms are stretched too far or there isn’t enough room on either side, relax them a bit more by adjusting the position of your bars closer or farther away from yourself.

    Seat Height

    Seat height is another element that you can play with to find the most comfortable upright position for your particular body. Some people prefer sitting closer to the ground and putting less strain on their leg muscles, others like sitting higher so they don’t feel too cramped and have room for adjustment if need be. Leaning back slightly in an upright riding position with a slight bend in your knees will provide relief from any pressure on your tailbone or spine.

    There are many other elements that make up a comfortable standard or upright riding position but these two elements of handlebars and seat height are easy places to start when looking for a comfortable riding position!

    However, what makes one person more comfortable in this riding position may not make another person as comfortable so be sure to check out heaps of different motorcycles with different height seats.

    If there is a motorcycle you absolutely love but the seat is a little too high, talk to the motorcycle salesperson or a mechanic, there are a few different ways you can adjust the height of your seat.

    Foot Peg Position & Height

    Did you know that your footpeg position can affect how comfortable your ride is? Having a comfortable upright riding position allows you to have a relaxed and neutral spine so being able to move around or shift positions during the ride is important. Be sure to play around with different peg positions and angles, higher or lower depending on what feels most comfortable for your particular body.

    The angle of your footpegs can be adjusted as well! We’ve all been there when we’re in a perfect riding position then all of a sudden we need to take a break, fumbling with the pegs trying to get them into an even more comfortable spot isn’t ideal- especially not when it happens while riding. Adjustable footpegs give you the option to adjust them before taking off on your journey.

    Height of Motorcycle

    This is more one for self-confidence than comfort while riding, but the height of your motorcycle is important. You’re going to feel the most comfortable maneuvering your motorcycle when your feet are flat on the ground, not dangling causing you to tip the motorcycle at an angle of past 20 degrees.

    There are many ways of stopping a motorcycle. Some people might choose to use the front brake more than the back brake. Others might just slam on the brakes without even thinking about it, and that is dangerous especially if you’re riding in traffic or at high speeds where taking your foot off of the throttle would be enough to cause an accident. When it comes to stopping your motorcycle the smoothest there is only one way that works the best.

    Only use your rear brake at the tail end of your stop will give you the smoothest way to stop a motorcycle. This is because rear braking keeps your weight backward on your motorcycle, as opposed to making your weight shift forward.

    Let’s break the different techniques for stopping motorcycles most effectively and safely, both with and without engine braking, front braking, and rear braking. and why I strongly advocate for the rear only brake when coming up to stop signs as the smoothest way of stopping your motorcycle.

    The smoothest way to stop a motorcycle

    Let’s run through the steps to stopping smoothly:

    1. Check mirrors
    2. Roll-off Throttle
    3. Apply Front and rear brake
    4. Clutch in & downshift one gear
    5. Clutch out slowly
    6. Ease off the front brake
    7. Increase pressure to the rear brake
    8. Clutch in & downshift to first gear
    9. Left foot on the ground

    Why you’ll never get a smooth stop with front braking

    When you front brake your weight is shifted forward onto the front forks, this is like a compressed spring ready to bounce back up. When you come to a complete stop this momentum pushes you backward making it virtually impossible to stop smoothly.

    Let’s break these down…

    1. Check Mirrors

    When it comes to any sort of braking on a motorcycle checking your mirrors is the most important thing you can do. If someone is too close to you and might rear-end you, or if there is an obstruction in your paths such as a pothole or another vehicle that you will need to avoid braking smoothly becomes super important.

    2. Roll Off Throttle

    This only applies when riding on the road with no engine braking available (mainly when riding without a license). It’s important not to coast off the throttle because this causes your motorcycle to decelerate at a different rate than expected giving you less control over what the bike is doing and how it reacts.

    3. Apply Front and Rear Brake

    When applying both brakes most people tend to slam down really hard on them both, I’ve seen many riders lift their feet off the ground when doing this. You might think that slamming down really hard on your brakes will stop you much quicker but in reality, it only hurts your ability to stop smoothly and quickly.

    4. Clutch in & Downshift One Gear

    Clutching in and downshifting one gear helps keep your RPMs high enough to give maximum engine braking. This is pretty common sense because you want to use all of the benefits that come with motorcycle engine braking such as using less energy from your rear brake, not wearing out your back tire quickly, and the bike slowing down at a controlled rate so you can maintain control of where you’re going and what’s around you before coming to a complete stop.

    5. Clutch Out Slowly

    Clutching out slowly helps keep your RPMs high enough to give maximum engine braking. Doing this just requires you to let the clutch out at a slow pace, which isn’t rocket science because if you’re riding with no license you might not have much choice but to use engine braking when it comes to stopping quickly, whereas riders with a motorcycle license can downshift instead of using both brakes to stop safely and smoothly.

    6. Ease off the Front Brake

    The front brake is one of two hydraulic components on a motorcycle so it’s important not to “slam” on or off them. Each time you change your pressure on the front brakes it will change your weight position (forward when braking and backward when accelerating). Ease off the front brakes softly.

    7. Increase pressure to the Rear Brake

    As you are releasing pressure from the front brake it is important that you increase pressure to the rear brake. Ultimately we are trying to come to a complete stop and this won’t be possible if we don’t apply braking pressure!

    It’s important not to increase too much pressure on your rear brake when slowing down because you don’t want it locking up and skidding out from under you, but at the same time, you don’t want to maintain too much weight on your front tire so it becomes unstable and starts bouncing up and down spastically. By gradually increasing rear brake pressure as you come closer to a complete stop whilst keeping your weight backward on the motorcycle.

    8. Clutch in & downshift to first gear

    This step is pretty self-explanatory, clutch in and downshift to first gear. Remember to keep your clutch in even after you have completed your stop.

    9. Left Foot on Ground

    This step is critical to stopping smoothly and looking like a badass that knows what they’re doing. Only put your left foot on the ground and keep your right foot on the rear brake. Putting both feet on the ground or your right foot on the ground is a sure-tell sign that you’re a noobie. There are many reasons why this is the case, but the largest is that keeping your right foot on the rear brake gives you maneuverability control over your motorcycle.

    As a motorcycle rider, you know that motorcycles rev high. But why do they rev so high? There are many reasons for this. This blog post will discuss five of the most common reasons that go into increasing the engine speed on a motorcycle to what is called “redline.”

    Motorcycles Rev high because is because their lack of torque. Because motorcycles have little torque, they must have high-revving engines in order to generate adequate power. Your motorcycle’s torque is closely linked to the RPMs of your engine.

    Let’s explore some of the key reasons why motorcycles rev high.

    High RPM = More Torque

    As mentioned above, motorcycles rev high because they lack torque. Torque is the rotational equivalent to horsepower in that it deals with how much power can be applied at a certain speed or RPMs. The higher your engine’s RPMs are, the more torque you will have and thus creating greater acceleration and performance from your motorcycle engine. This means having to shift less often when riding up hills or mountains where shifting gears would be necessary if you had a lower-revving bike instead of one that has several thousand RPMs under its belt.

    Power/Weight Ratio of a Motorcycle

    Motorcycles Rev High because of their lightweight and higher horsepower than cars. The power-weight ratio for cars is about 20 hp/ton while it is 30hp/ton for bikes. Vehicles with low ratios tend to have smaller engines which means lower torque but this isn’t necessarily true in all cases since some vehicles also use bigger air intakes, exhaust systems, etc., thus increasing the amount of air coming into the engine.

    Higher RPM = More Accelleration

    We all know that motorcyclists love acceleration and speed.

    Another reason motorcycles rev so high is to increase acceleration. When your motorcycle picks up speed, there are two ways for you to go faster; either change gears or let on the gas and allow the engine to climb higher in RPMs where it will be operating more efficiently (and thus increasing your rate of acceleration). This second option can lead into a “power band” which essentially means that by letting your bike’s RPMs climb naturally, you’ll reach optimal power output at around 6000RPM’s while if you were to shift gears instead, this would happen closer to 8000RPMs.

    A Higher Ranger of RPMs Helps you Manuever

    Another reason motorcycles rev so high is because controlling them requires finesse rather than brute strength like cars does. If you’ve ever driven an automatic car, you know that there is little to no finesse involved. You simply step on the gas and drive. But with motorcycles, it’s not so simple. If you want your bike to accelerate quickly or go faster than another rider, then revving the engine higher can help provide better acceleration as well as more speed which also requires twisting your throttle more aggressively (and thus increasing RPMs).

    Now that we’ve explored some key reasons why motorcycles rev so high, let’s go over some common questions that I was curious about when researching motorcycle RPMs, torque, and revving.

    What can the Average Motorcycle Rev to Before Redlining?

    On average they can rev to about 8000 RPM before they reach redline.

    It’s important to note that different bikes and exhaust setups will change the exact number of peak RPM points, but on most bikes, they’ll max out around 8,000 rpm. Some motorcycles can outperform others with a mechanical drive (without the use of an electric starter) such as Harley Davidson’s Twin Cam 103 engine which has 12,000 peak revolutions per minute at redline.

    Can I increase my Motorcycle RPM?

    Yes! Increasing your motorcycle’s torque and horsepower will cause the engine to spin faster and increase your motorcycle’s RPM.

    Higher performance motorcycles will generally have a higher redline than lower-end bikes, but both can be tweaked to get more power out of them. Here are some things you can do:

    Upgrade Carburetor

    Upgrade the carburetor or replace it altogether with a different option such as an air intake or fuel injection system that enables more air into the combustion chamber; this increases how much fuel is mixed with oxygen which in turn results in an increase in energy and delivers an increased amount of KEN (power) at redline.

    Performance Exhaust System

    Invest in a performance exhaust system to increase airflow and reduce backpressure, resulting in more power at redline with improved throttle response (fuel injection systems require less RPM than carburetors).

    Improve Handling

    Whist this one won’t technically improve your RPMs it will improve your performance hugely which in turn will improve your torque! Improve your motorcycle’s handling using risers or footpegs for tightening upturns and assuring that your motorcycle can handle the increased torque.

    What should my RPM be Idle at?

    A motorcycle’s RPM should be around 800 when it is idling. Anything from 600 to 1000 RPM would be considered normal. If your motorcycle is below this you might be in a higher gear than first. And if your motorcycle is revving higher than this at idle than you outside of you should consider taking it to a mechanic.

    What will cause my Motorcycle to Decrease in RPMs?

    When you’re accelerating your front tire typically loses grip and tries to lift off the ground, though this can vary depending on throttle input and vehicle weight distribution. This loss of traction causes a drop in speed which results in a lower horsepower, torque, and engine rpm; if losses are too great they’ll redline! Although this phenomenon happens frequently at higher speeds (especially with heavy bikes) it also occurs at much lower speeds such as parking or coming up to an intersection from a stoplight.

    Should you Buy an Automatic Transmission?

    Whether or not you should buy a bike with an automatic transmission really down to you. There are a number of benefits to investing in an automatic transmission motorcycle over a standard model, but the main benefit is convenience. Automatic transmission motorcycles are typically easier to ride due to the fact that they both change gear for you and remain fully balanced when stopped.     Buying your first motorcycle can be a daunting and overwhelming process. And as with most things in life, it is better when you know what to expect and there are no surprises. In my experience, the best way for beginner biker to buy their first motorcycle is by going into the process fully informed about pricing so that they aren’t surprised or disappointed after buying.

    This article will cover how much you should spend on your first motorcycle, good beginner motorcycles that I personally recommend, the costs associated with buying gear & some considerations you might have overlooked.

    How much should you spend on your first Motorcycle?

    Your first motorcycle should cost between $2000 – $4000. You’re far more likely to drop, scratch, and possibly crash your first Motorcycle than any other motorcycle you’ll ever own. Sorry if that is not what you wanted to hear, but it’s the truth. Motorcycle prices will fluctuate from country to country, but you shouldn’t have an issue finding some great street motorcycles (sports or naked bikes) for this price.

    When it comes to your first motorcycle, my recommendation is that you don’t spend every penny you have on it. If you did purchase that expensive $14,000 Ducati Monster and crashed it, it will likely discourage you from riding.

    I recommend that your first Motorcycle be a used motorcycle so that if something does happen to it or lose interest in the sport entirely then at least some of your investment can be recouped back by selling the bike.

    Should your First Motorcycle be Used or Brand New?

    Used motorcycle street bikes are my personal preference for a first-time motorcycle. Avoid bigger touring bikes or adventure bikes until you have more control over motorcycling.

    My reasoning for this has to do with the long-term costs associated with owning & operating it. Yes, you will not have as many concerns and issues when buying a brand new vehicle but nothing in life is perfect – especially motorcycles! And sometimes buying a brand new motorcycle can lead to buyer’s remorse and feelings of regret later down the line after making such an investment when there was no need to make one at all (especially if you didn’t like riding).

    I’ve seen people go through both situations personal experience myself: someone buys their dream bike on finance only then discover they don’t enjoy the sport or them getting out of riding altogether.

    Best First Motorcycles for Beginner Riders

    First off I recommend something around the 300CC range for your new motorcycle. This will give you enough grunt to go but won’t overwhelm you. Trust me, when you’re new to biking and buying a motorcycle bigger is not always better!

    Here are the best first motorcycles for beginner riders:

    Honda CBR 300R (2014-2019) – Average Price $3300

    The Honda CBR 300R is a fantastic first bike for anyone looking at getting into the sport.

    This bike is fantastic value for your money considering all of its features and benefits (see more below). It’s also very comfortable to ride on longer journeys without feeling fatigued too quickly.

    A street bike like the Honda CBR 300R is very well balanced. It has a low center of gravity so you won’t get as many wobbles or tip-overs when cornering and almost always keeps the bike stable at high speeds which can be quite surprising for riders who are new to motorcycles because they feel like they lose balance at such speeds but with this motorcycle, in particular, it’s usually not an issue. Buying a motorcycle like the CBR 300R would be a solid first choice.

    The seat height on the 2015 model (the year I got mine) is also relatively short compared to other first bikes which makes mounting & dismounting it easy – especially if you’re short! The seat itself isn’t too wide either so even those with smaller statures will still fit comfortably without feeling cramped up on the back end. Don’t overlook this sexy street bike for your first new motorcycle.

    Kawasaki Ninja 300 (2014-2019) – Average Price $4000

    Street bikes like the Kawasaki Ninja 300 are great first bikes for beginner riders.

    It’s also light and responsive which makes it easy to maneuver around tight corners or other obstacles on the road. The 2015 model has a very comfortable seat which is thin and not bulky like some other motorcycles. This makes it easy to mount & dismount, especially if you’re short in stature or have smaller legs (like I do).

    The Ninja 300 also has ABS brakes which is a fantastic safety feature to have (especially if you’re just starting out). ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when braking which can make a huge difference in avoiding accidents. Buying a motorcycle with ABS is not essential, but it is helpful. There are talks of mandating ABS in the not too distant future.

    The Ninja 300 has also been known to be quite reliable and fuel-efficient – two things you want if purchasing your first bike.

    Yamaha YZF-R 300 (2014-2019) – Average Price $4000

    The Yamaha YZF-R 300 is another great first bike for beginner riders.

    This motorcycle is also a very popular choice among casual and frequent riders alike because it’s comfortable, has good fuel efficiency, and has ABS brakes just like the Ninja 300 and costs slightly less if you’re looking to save some money (which can be important when starting out). It doesn’t have as lightweight or nimble a feel as the Kawasaki Ninja but will still give you plenty of confidence while riding around corners at higher speeds. Buying a motorcycle like the ninja will give you a lot of joy.

    Suzuki GSX250R (2014-2019) – Average Price $4000

    Another very popular choice among beginner riders is the Suzuki GSX250R.

    This motorcycle has a more nimble feel than most other motorcycles in its class which makes it easier to maneuver around tight corners and obstacles on roads or riding paths with ease. The seat height is also quite short, making mounting & dismounting easy as well (especially if you’re shorter).

    However, this model doesn’t have ABS brakes like some of the others do so make sure that’s something you want before purchasing this bike because it will be harder for beginners to avoid accidents without ABS when braking at high speeds. If not having ABS isn’t an issue then there really isn’t anything wrong with choosing the Suzuki GSX.

    Duke 390 (2014-2019) – Average Price $5000

    The Duke 390 is a great mid-range first bike for beginner riders. I would say the Duke is on the higher end of the price range here.

    It’s got an average seat height and is not too bulky but doesn’t have ABS brakes which are important to many beginners so this might be something you need to consider before making the purchase. The 390CC engine associated with buying this motorcycle makes it very appealing though because it’s powerful and responsive for a first bike. The Duke also has a good fuel efficiency so you won’t have to fill up as often which is nice.

    I will say I noticed the seat high of this bike was significantly higher than I was expecting. Whilst I’m 5″10, I didn’t have an issue getting on, but my 5″4 wife struggled. When buying a motorcycle, make sure that you can comfortably touch the floor when leaning to one side.

    Must-Have Motorcycle Riding Gear & How much do Spend

    Once you’ve decided which motorcycle to get, there are some additional things you need to consider before hitting the road. I recommend getting a helmet, a jacket, gloves & boots. Let’s break down how much you should spend on each:

    Helmet – Spend $300

    The cost of a helmet fluctuates hugely. But something that manufacturers don’t tell you is that when you skimp out on a helmet you’re actually not skimping out on safety, but rather cutting out a lot of your comfort.

    You see, all helmets sold in the USA need to meet minimum safety standards, so that’s not the problem here. The thing is – all helmets sold in USA are DOT certified which means they pass this standard:

    DOT stands for Department of Transportation and these helmets have been tested to meet certain criteria when it comes to impact resistance & penetration resistance (meaning if you get hit by something how well will the helmet protect your head).

    The problem is that these helmets were designed for people who are not going to wear them. That means they’re incredibly uncomfortable because you don’t want it touching your face, so companies add thicker cheek pads & whatnot which all adds weight and makes the helmet heavier than normal. They also have a cheaper plastic shell that’s thicker than normal so when you drop your helmet it doesn’t crack.

    So what does this mean? It means that if you’re spending $100 on a cheap DOT certified helmet, don’t be surprised by how thick the pads are inside or how heavy it is compared to more expensive helmets.

    When you buy a more expensive helmet you are paying for lightweight and comfort.

    I would suggest spending $300 on a helmet, that way you can get something comfortable without spending a fortune.

    Jacket – Spend $200

    The motorcycle jacket is the second most important motorcycle riding gear you’ll need. I would recommend that you spend around $200 on a jacket.

    Buying a leather jacket will get you the best protection. Leather is thick and has a lot of impact resistance meaning that if you fall off your bike it will protect you better in a slide.

    Make sure you purchase a spine protector with your jacket.

    Gloves – Spend $120

    Gloves are the first line of defense when it comes to your hands hitting the ground.

    When it comes to gloves, I would recommend any of the Five gloves these are absolutely fantastic. These can set you back anywhere between $60-$120.

    Motorcycle Boots – Spend $150

    Boots are the next step in motorcycle riding gear. There is a big difference between boots and shoes. Shoes offer no protection at all, whereas boots will protect your ankles from rolling over which can be very painful if it happens to you!

    I would recommend you spend $150 on a good pair of boots. Safety gear like motorcycle boots will save you while learning.

    Other costs to owning a First Motorcycle

    Motorcycle Insurance – The cost of motorcycle insurance is determined by a number of factors. The main ones are the make and year of your bike, where you live, how safe your driving record is, and what cover level you require for your circumstances. On average a motorcyclist spends between $300 to $700 per year on motorcycle insurance. The insurance on a $3000 2015 motorcycle will be towards that $300, whilst a brand new Harley Davidson will be more like $700.

    FuelAverage price $100 / month if you are looking at a gas motorcycle or average price of $5 / month if you’re looking at electric motorcycles.

    Storage Fees – If you’re living in an apartment or house, make sure to account for storage fees. These vary from state to state but usually, it’s around $20 / month. So if you own your home and don’t have any issues

    Registration – Average Price $90 / Year

    License and Riding Courses – Getting your motorcycle license and paying for riding courses cost money. The average price can be anywhere between $200 – $500 depending on where you go. These license and riding courses are once-off costs but can’t be overlooked.

    Tires – Depends on the bike, but around $50 per tire every year or two.

    Maintenance/Repairs – Depends on the Bike and how well you take care of it. Around ~$400 a year between oil changes, brake pads & air filters, etc.

    Some final thoughts…

    The cost of buying your first motorcycle can vary depending on the type of bike you’re looking for, but in general, you should expect to spend around $2,000-$4000 to purchase a 2014 to 2018 street bike. This will get you a decent beginner-level bike & save you enough money to purchase all the safety gear that you need to stay safe riding. Purchasing that brand new Harley Davidson cruiser might look pretty slick, but won’t give you the best first-time rider experience you need.

    The most important thing to consider when purchasing your first motorcycle is how much time and money you want to invest into maintenance while still getting plenty of enjoyment out of riding!

    How to calculate what size gas can I need for my situation?

    When planning a large ride you need to determine how many gas stops there are on your route.

    To do so follow the below steps:

    1. Open Google Maps
    2. Enter your route and click start
    3. Click the search button and enter ‘petrol stations’
    4. Measure (roughly) the longest distances between each stop

    The below example used a Honda CBR 500R (2015) @ 80.2 MPG for reference

    So for example, you’ve got a leg of a trip with 400 miles between 2 gas stops and your fuel tank takes 4.1 Gallons, which @ 80.2 MPG will give you 336 Miles.

    You will need an additional 0.8 Gallon to go the extra 63 miles.

    PLUS add an additional 1 gallon for ‘contingency’. No one wants to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere, so however much gas it is you need to add an additional 1 gallon for safety.

Many people purchase a larger can than they need because they think having more capacity means that it will last longer between fill-ups. However, carry stupid amounts more gas than you need is not only inconvenient but can be dangerous.

    Heavier containers are safer than lighter ones

    NOPE! When in motion, heavier objects create an unstable ride for your motorcycle. Not only are heavier gas cans more of a liability when riding they also add a heap of weight to your bike which you won’t be used to when mounting and dismounting your bike. This could result in tipping over in that cafe car park. Not cool.

    I should be able to use any sturdy Plastic Containers

    The containers I’ve mentioned above are all Plastic containers are all EPA and CARB compliant fuel containers. Please don’t use a random plastic container.

    Don’t Store Gasoline in your garage for a prolonged period of time

    Many people don’t consider the effect of storing gasoline for long periods of time, but it’s important to know that gasoline will evaporate after about 2 or 3 months when stored outside. The longer it’s stored, the more water and other impurities which collect in gas during evaporation which makes it extremely dangerous as this creates a highly flammable mixture. So after that long ride, empty the remainder of that gas can into your bike.

    For decades, the motorcycle industry has been dominated by gas-powered bikes. But with recent advancements in battery technology and an ever-growing movement of eco-conscious consumers, electric motorcycles are becoming a more viable option for riders. So is there a future in electric motorcycles? Or are they just a fad that will disappear within the decade?

    Of course, opinions go rampant on this subject, and whilst this article is an opinion piece, I do include some statistics and data to try and make a case.

    Electric motorcycles will definitely take off, it’s just a matter of time. They are not a fad, in fact, they are the future of motorcycles. With countries like the UK making claims that they will ban the use of petrol combustion engines by 2030 (The Guardian) and certain states of the USA such as California banning the sale of new gasoline cars from 2035(The Guardian); it’s only fair to say that these restrictions will, in time, come to pass for motorcycles.

    Why haven’t Electric Motorcycles taken off yet?

    Electric motorcycles are an emerging market

    As with any emerging market, there are teething issues. The biggest issue is the lack of manufacturing powerhouses that have heavily invested in the electric motor industry at this time and it’s why we haven’t seen a lot more advancements from them other than some very small-scale offerings for private use.

    However, major motorcycle manufacturers such as Harley Davidson are beginning to dip their toes into the water by bringing out limited edition models or making claims about what they will produce over the next few years (such as Energica below or the harley davidson livewire).

    The culture around Roaring Gasoline Engines

    The other reason that electric motorcycles haven’t taken off yet is the culture around petrol engines and the stigma around electric engines. There is something romantic about the roar of a gasoline engine, and whilst electric motorcycles have their own form of character in the noise they make, it’s not what petrol heads crave.

    But as with all technology; this stigma will eventually fade away. There is nothing “cool” or “sexy” about being tied to an oil well for your fuel supply.

    Electric motorcycles Benefits

    Electric motorcycles have a few good benefits and some bad downsides. However, they are not nearly as bad or limiting in their disadvantages when compared to gas-powered bikes.

    Electric Motorcycles Are Cheaper to Run than Gas Motorcycles

    The financial savings of an electric motorcycle over a gas one can be significant. The cost-efficiency of an electric motorcycle is based on how much you ride the bike, and if you’re riding it all day long on average, then your carbon savings will likely outweigh the increased upfront expense.

    However, this isn’t to say that these bikes are cheaper in the long run because they may require expensive replacement parts or battery replacements, and maintaining an electric motorcycle also costs more than maintaining a gas one.

    If you ride your bike 15 miles each day (a very reasonable amount), then the financial benefits of your purchase start to kick in. You’ll spend about $7 per week for electrical power to charge up the electric bike from your home. Compare that to the $40 or more you’d spend each week on gasoline for a gas bike.

    The above estimations are exactly that, estimations, please do your own calculations when working out your financial saving associated with switching to an electric motorcycle.

    Electric Motorcycles have Fewer Maintenance Issues than Gas Motorcycles

    The first of these benefits is that electric motorcycles have fewer maintenance issues than gas-powered bikes. Electric motorcycles don’t need oil changes, which are a common and costly issue for many riders (and one of the top reasons why people hate their motorcycles).

    Electric Motorcycles are Better for the Environment than Gas Motorcycles

    One of the other big benefits of electric bikes are the environmental benefits, and it’s something that a lot of people care about these days. The truth is that electric motorcycles are better for the environment than gas-powered ones. Electric motors produce no emissions whatsoever whereas gas engines often emit some form of pollutants into the air or into waterways. This not only helps to improve air quality in cities by reducing particle emissions and CO2 emissions but it also means that fewer resources have to be used for fueling up which would probably stop if we all switched over to an electric bike.

    The environmental benefits don’t stop there, either. A gas motorcycle often requires oil to be burned, which produces fumes that are then released into the air or runoff into lakes and rivers, where they cause problems with aquatic life. Electric motorcycles don’t require oil changes, which eliminates this issue entirely.

    Electric Motorcycles have No Throttle Response Issues

    One of the biggest issues that people had with earlier models of electric motorcycles was the way they responded to throttle input. The first version of electric bike technology could only manage a max RPM, at which point acceleration would become severely limited, and it wouldn’t gain any speed even if you pushed down on the gas peddle as far as it could go.

    These days, these issues have been largely eliminated, and there are now models of electric motorcycles on the market that offer complete throttle response without any limitations.

    It is clear that battery technology improvements over time will allow an electric bike to continue advancing in performance while conserving battery life as well as range per charge. When this is compared to combustion engines, combustion engines have had their peak in technological advancements and will only see incremental improvements here on out.

    Right now, most electric motorcycles give you a range of around 100km, which is perfect for city commuting, but the technology of battery packs needs to advance for us to see anything close to the highway range of a gas motorcycle.

    Electric Motorcycles are quieter than Gas Motorcycles

    I know this one’s going to turn heads because we bikers LOVE the sound of our engines. But, as a society, we are becoming more aware of the detrimental noise pollution that motorcycles can cause.

    It can be annoying to people trying to relax in parks, or neighbourhoods with many bikers – why contribute to that problem?

    If we want more people to ride bikes as a standard daily commuter, I really do believe making quieter bikes will help with that.

    In the future I would expect that e-motorcycles would be perfect for just about everyone, not just those who are eco friendly. With the exception of those who want to hear the sound of a roaring gas engine.

    To Sum up

    Electic motorcycles, like all Electric Vehicles, Just Make Sense. But they have a long way to go before they are taking over gas motorcycles. Better range, battery technology & an increase in production will all help with this.

    A motorcycle will run on a dead battery provided that it has a jump start or some way of turning over the engine. Once the engine has been turned over the alternator will power each of the necessary components and will run even if the battery is dead.

    Let’s explore a few ways that you can run a motorcycle with a dead battery…

    Push Start

    A push start is just what it sounds like, you use your body as the engine to get your bike started. Make sure that you’re wearing proper shoes for this kind of work! To perform a push start:

    1. Line your bike up so that you can get a good amount of momentum, a hill is perfect for this!
    2. Clutch In, change gears to 2nd & release Breaks.
    3. Whilst sitting on your motorcycle start pushing your bike forward. Collecting the momentum of the downhill if possible.
    4. Once you’ve been moving forward for long enough, give your bike some gas and release the clutch!
    5. Hopefully, you’ll get a burst of speed going and your motorcycle will start. If not, repeat the process ensuring that the hill is steep enough to allow for a good speed increase on your push off.

    Pro Tip: Make sure that when you release the clutch it’s done in one swift motion, don’t ease off or stop as this will cause stalling.

    Use a Bike Jump Starters

    If you’re looking for something more convenient than push-starting, consider investing in one of those contraptions that you hook up to your motorcycle’s battery and it gives a bit of power for you to get on the road. These are often referred to as jump starters.

    Make sure that you read the instructions to ensure that you know how much power the jump starter puts out, some only put out enough for starting a bike with an extremely dead battery but do not supply enough juice for running once started.

    1. Open your seat or gas tank and touch one end of the cables (usually red) to where your battery is located and the other end (usually black) onto where you would normally attach jumper cables from another car.
    2. Try turning over your motorcycle, if all goes well you should be able to start it.

    Use another Battery to Jump Start your Bike

    Another trick to try is attaching a small battery charger (like those that are used to recharge cell phones) to your motorcycle’s dead battery. Make sure that the charger doesn’t have too much power or else you’ll end up with a fried battery.

    Just make sure that you check which terminals on the battery are positive and negative before hooking it up since these chargers may fry your electronic components if hooked up incorrectly.  

    Never hook up a car battery directly to your motorcycle because their internal chemistries are different and could cause explosions! The consequences of getting this wrong are usually fatal. 

    Why do motorcycles need batteries in the first place?

    A battery supplies power to all of the electrical components on your motorcycle including things like your lights, gauges (speedometer and tachometer), and starter.

    The battery on a motorcycle is typically an AGM (absorbed glass mat) or gel cell battery. These batteries are sealed so they do not leak acid even if you lay them on their side. Even though the batteries are sealed, they still vent gasses because the lead plates inside are “recharged” with oxygen from the air around them when you start your motorcycle by turning over the engine with a key or push button.

    If your battery is dead, all of the power in it has been used up. When you turn your motorcycle over with no battery hooked up/dead, there will be no power for the starter and all of the components. This means that there will be no voltage going to your lights either, so you’ll have no way of knowing whether or not it will start until you try!

    So you haven’t touched your bike in a few years, or maybe you’ve just purchased a new bike from the auction and before you’ve started it you’ve checked the engine oil only to see that it’s dry as a bone.

    Whilst your motorcycle engine MIGHT start without engine oil. Please, don’t try and start it! Without any oil in an engine, it would damage your engine and might result in it seizing up.

    Oil lubricates moving metal parts by reducing friction and wear. It also forms a seal against the spinning metal, stopping the metal from coming into contact with other surrounding materials. Without any oil in an engine, it would seize up immediately.

    What happens to a motorcycle engine in the absence of oil?

    When there is no oil in an engine then the parts begin to come into contact with each other at high speeds. It’s only a matter of seconds before the engine will before inequitable damage has been made.

    Inside your engine is a centrifugal flywheel that spins along with the crankshaft at a high speed when the motorcycle is ridden and uses energy (kinetic motion) to keep itself spinning even without power applied to it through rotary motion (like a pulley). This flywheel is attached to one of several points on the crankshaft by means of a key (just a thin metal strip) that rides in a groove on the crankshaft. The other end of this key is anchored inside the flywheel and holds it high in the air while weight is disconnected from it. If you try to start your motorcycle, then there’s nothing forcing the key into the housing of the flywheel so all that kinetic energy will be released and go who knows where (aside from likely creating a safety hazard).

    What should I do to start my motorcycle engine without oil?

    Go get some engine oil! Trying to start the engine without engine oil is simply a horrible idea. Before you attempt to start the motorcycle engine, ensure you have some engine oil in it.

    How do I know if my motorcycle has enough oil?

    If the level of your engine oil is correct then you should be able to put a dipstick in the engine and pull it out. The dirt on the stick will show how much oil is in there. If there’s no oil visible on it at all, then you’ll need some more!

    How do I add oil to my motorcycle engine?

    Step 1: Purchase engine oil

    If there is no oil in the engine then you’ll need to get some before your bike will start! Make sure you buy the correct grade of oil for your motorcycle as they’re not all compatible.

    Step 2: Find your Engine Oil Cap

    In order to add oil to the engine, you’re going to need access. To open up your motorcycle engine, locate the oil cap and twist it off of the bike (it’s usually located near where the petrol goes).

    Step 3: Put the engine oil in my motorcycle engine

    Once you’ve got some engine oil and found where to put it into your bike then carefully take your motorcycle to somewhere safe, like a garage or car park. A place with as little dust/dirt would be best. Place it on its stand (if any) and open up the filler cap so that you can pour the engine oil in. Fill until you see some dirt on your dipstick! You’ll need anywhere from about half a liter of oil to 2 or 3 depending on what sort of motorcycle you have.
